Aftermath

Urgent call for Zack, line 1. Zack, line 1.

Zack’s senses slowly attuned to the strange new world about him. This world wasn’t right. Mist hid the platform he stood on beyond 15 feet, but he could still see the vast emptiness beyond. Weightless boulders hung in mid air, black tendrils of, gods know what, streaked through the purple-red sky, movement played upon his peripheral vision, but when he looked nothing was there.

Looking around Zack could see all his companions slowly taking stock of the world as well. A shiver went up his spine? Was it the chill of the void, fear, or something else?

Without warning Master Volstagg’s voice surged through Zack’s mind. It was distorted, like there was a wild river rapid roaring nearby, but Zack managed to make out the 25 words that came through.

“Location? Not Aethis? I finding you. Much to discuss. If Geftlubadd – Nietz. Malcavia or Usan – Stall. Barren – Look for Storm Orcs, cite Stellar, Morboc listens.”

How was he going to explain THIS in 25 words?

In Shadow's Wake

“Commander.” A voice in the darkness growled out.

“Yes, my Lord.”

“I know you are not yet accustomed to our ways, but I have chosen you to lead and it is important that you refer to me as Garax. It is a title of my people that I have chosen as being most appropriate. Those who arrive must understand the nature of our work.”

“Yes, Garax.”

“Make ready my scouts. I have communed with the Lords and they indicate that the time is nigh.”

“Are you sure my Lo- Garax? There are still only minor occurrences and even they are being subdued.”

“It is as you say, but I have trusted the judgement of the Lords thus far and I think it would be imprudent to stray from their conclusions now. Don’t you?”

“Of course Garax, I only meant to- I didn’t mean to presume.“

“There is no cause for apology Commander. I do not know how you were commanded in your past, but I ask your opinion because I wish to know your thoughts. As powerful as my intellect may be, it is still possible for details to escape my notice. This is why I have gathered you and your brothers to me. I believe that you and yours have the potential to be a great force in this world, a beacon of enlightenment and strength.

A massive shape shifted in the darkness before the rumbling voice continued, “The world has darkened since the necromancer showed himself. The mortal races scramble to defend themselves from the aftermath of his might. The elder races bar their doors or contemplate departure from this continent. Dire creatures are being driven mad from the residual energies of the necromancer’s presence. Gods of chaos move to take a greater hold on the world. The higher planes debate and theorize in a constant cycle of perpetual intellectuality. The lower planes sit on the brink of a long coming civil war. Dragons sit idly by, and believe, in their arrogance, that they will always endure and use higher morality to dictate that they owe no responsibility to the world.

“Even if we should be granted access to the great halls of the elder races, they cannot put aside their feuds long enough to see the world for what it is becoming. I would trust in the mortal races, but for their short life spans and heated ambitions. There are those within any race that can be trusted and allied with, but ultimately they are self-corrupting and cannot be the leaders in the next age. Yet your kind stands before me, forged by conflict, cleansed of impurities, clear minded, and vessels of knowledge.

“The whole is only as great as the sum of its parts. I can guide and lead your people, but only in its infancy. Soon your kind will surpass me, become greater, wiser and more powerful than I could ever have hoped to be. When this day happens I wish only to fully commit myself to your enlightenment and service.

“So know that when I ask for your judgement and your wisdom that I will never ask in malice or in mockery. Like a father teaching his children, I wish to see you find your true potential. Now, go my child. Wake more of your kind from their slumber. Guide them, as I have guided you. Reveal the benefits of enlightenment, then bring them to me so I may illuminate their path.” The creature began to move again, slowly moving its large mass away from his commander.

“It will be my pleasure, Garax.” These last words were spoken lightly, although the commander was sure they were heard.

Shit is Getting Real

The long sword swung through the air,

“A Knight is Sworn to Valor”

Its razor sharp edge humming as it cleanly cut through a score of invisible foes.

“His Heart Knows Only Virtue”

His sword work was not sloppy, too many years as a squire,

“His Blade Defends the Helpless”

too many more with her; he would not forget so easily the comforts and power that accompanies a Knights favorite companion.

“His Might Upholds the weak”

The sword twisted in its final movements parrying and coming up with reversed grip

“His Word Speaks only Truth”

He twisted and brought the sword up in a salute, finishing his incantation,

“His Wrath undoes the Wicked”

He waited to feel the cold steel of her armor against his back, it did not come, just a slight tingle; enough to let him know he had completed the magic correctly, that he had done his exercise flawlessly but that she chose not to come. He stood for a moment, willing her into existence, again there was nothing.

“Gods damn it! I’m sorry alright, I am gods be damned sorry, is that what you want to hear?”

He yelled to the heavens and threw the sword across the room; it circled in three lean arcs before sinking deeply into a wooden desk,

THUUNK.

“What do you want from me? What kind of Knight are you?”

Zack stormed across the room pushing over stacks of books in his anger, he no longer cared about his companions studies nearby, he was talking to her or maybe to the great HIM, but no one else

“He killed them, He raped my mother over and over, and he killed my little sister, he KILLED THEM! All while I was with you; he was there KILLING THEM! That sick rapist fuck deserved a lot worse then what he got, he killed them and he did it while holding the title of everything we represent, that shit is ok with you! Those are the Great teaching of Ironus? Letting knights rape and murder washer women and little girls? Answer me! WHY WON’T YOU ANSWER ME!”

He turned and flipped a table, grabbing a chair and throwing it across the room, it shattered as it hit the wall

“I stand here begging for support and advice, if I go down this road; I may not come back… DON’T YOU CARE? DOSE ALL WE WENT THROUGH MEAN NOTHING TO YOU?”

He spun in a fury looking for anything to break, anything to destroy, there was little; he heaved a breath in fatigue and collapsed in the middle of the room

“It must be so nice, so wonderful to be able to sit on high a judge… well you know what I am sick of being judged, being looked down on, I am sick of it all. How many have you killed Morelle? How many have fallen under your blade, HOW MANY? Cause from where I am sitting it’s many more than mine. Ya I killed the Guthrie, and I had those things done, I’ll own my shit, it was me. But you know what Robby here is with me; he thinks that there is a plane of Goblin. I’m gonna know soon, and that’s gonna tell us a whole lot. I didn’t kill the wizard, Knock did, but you know what… YOU KNOW WHAT! If I had had the chance, I would have, and if you had been there I know you would have too. You would have”

Zack shakily stood up and looked around the room, casting his eyes towards the heavens “I am sorry for Guthrie, I shouldn’t have done it like that, but I am not sorry he is dead. Now I stand here before you, before both you and Ironus asking for your counsel, I am about to walk into a room with the God of Evil and Choas, I am doing it cause there may be thousands, if not millions of lives on the line. I’m not sure if the lives are real, I’m not sure if any of this is real, I am not sure what is right, or if it is right how to do the right thing. I can’t even tell who are the good guys anymore, and the further I go the blinder I become… I need your help…. Please” he dropped to his knees on the last words, they came out as barley a whisper, and he waited. Nothing happened; he waited a long time in silence. Nothing came, slowly he stood

“Well, I guess we know where the knight and the Lord of Good and Law stand…” he wiped the tears from his eyes and took a shaky breath, standing “I choose Entropy over Apathy, farewell” he turned and left the room, leaving the sword in the desk and his mess, he knew now, no matter what choice he made, he was making it alone.

Letters

Zack shook the cramps out of his hand, he was not used to writing, the paper showed it, this was his third attempt and was the first readable copy, the others were to smeared and smudged. he looked up at Rickroll, the goblin was still pouting, he wanted to write the letter, but Zack felt that this was a Greyman duty, and had to be done on his own, he reread the letter to assure he had it all right

Master Volstagg,

I write this letter hoping it reaches you sooner rather than later; quickly I feel like we are fast exceeding our depth and abilities and yet things seem to be progressing at an exponential rate. You see Sir, I have been a Greyman for several years, mostly operating throughout the region of Osweldt. Recently, within the last two moons that is, while traveling and mildly lost in the Northern woods, I found myself arrive on a road in Einnendorf. Allow me to be clear here, I did not wander the woods to Einnendorf, but feel I was somehow magically transported there. I will admit to having no proof to this, I am a caster and felt nor noticed any magical affect, merely the time of my travel was impossibly quick, and geographically not possible based on supplies and skills. Upon arriving I was immediately met by Greymen Siegfried von Heisenberg and Edmond Gray, a contractor to the Greymen in the south. Both were being pursued heavily by wolves of a dire verity. My companions and I quickly sprung to the rescue of the two weary travelers and drove off the wolves, here they informed me of their recent adventures, rather than paraphrase I include with this missive a copy of Greymen von Heisenbergs report of the dwarven tomb as well as his last orders from the Captain and the Greymen there.

Understanding from the report that all my brothers within the order were at risk, my companions and I quickly agreed to aid the two, and we made all haste westwards hoping to gain valuable information from a library or church. On the way we stopped in Lichtenrade, here we hoped to gain aid from a local library but found none available, we also discussed resources and knowing how expensive clerical aid could be, agreed to aid the local lord on a three day detour to earn some quick funds. Apparently the local tower had been attacking and had killed some local populace. The lord of the town wanted it cleared but was unwilling to do anything with his own men, and PURE was well… being PURE, meaning… well Sir you have heard this story so many times I don’t feel I need to explain to deeply. We quickly entered the tower procuring the aid of some local talent in hopes that we could neutralise the threat to the town and be on our way with funds enough to stop or slow this dangerous curse.

The tower was apparently inhabited by a Wizard named Oberdon. He attacked us and long story short was killed in battle. Apparently he was a nice wizard (I have yet to see any real evidence of this, as he definitely tried to kill and maim us, but whatever that’s what we’re going with right now) who was working for/with the Kaiser and the god Malcav. He was trying to stop elemental lords from destroying the world or something… not really sure on that point as it was never made clear. Anyway apparently this guy was really into Malcav and it rightly ticked off the god of magic when he got killed (ironically through magic). It ticked him off so much that he sent down a fellow named ASIS, he is like a noble or sorts who may or may not keep slaves but reports directly to Malcav. ASIS tells us we committed a divine crime and that self defense is not a defense at all. We argued some… in arguing we found out that the fellow was just really ticked, and actually needed Greymen von Heisenberg and Mr. Gray due to their exposure the dwarven tomb, the curse and something called rune magic (I never heard of it either, but apparently it does exist). He wants us to agree to help find something called the Rune Forge because….? And secure it so he can…..? There really were a lot of things that were left ambiguous. After much debate Mr. Gray drew up an agreeable contract to search this thing out and both he and my fellow Greyman signed it. I was less inclined to sign, it didn’t feel right and I didn’t like the look or feel of this fellow, but I was told if I didn’t sign my companions would be whisked away to fend for themselves and I would not be able to travel with them anymore. Feeling it was better for the order, and the safety of my companions I signed on as well. We were promply dumped into a tomb to receive our “signing bonus” the tomb was located back in northern Osweldt and filled with undead and other such nasty things. We were to retrieve magic type crystals so our friends could receive runic detection type powers. It got harry in their but all in all it was done. I have attached a map with the location of the tomb… the tomb IS NOT CLEAR… there is still a powerful Spector type creature there, he appears to be none violent presently, but that can change quickly. I recommend securities be established in the area, or at least someone be sent to check on it.

Anyway with all this crap done, ASIS “the grouchy” shows up again and preforms his little ceremony linking us to Malcav, he also tells us we need to push past the orcish lands and Zenoi and into the bad lands beyond to find a book that may say something about a forge. My companions and I are very nearly tapped as far as coin comes into it, and are nowhere near able to finance such a journey. In order to garner some favour and coin we have agreed to aid a local lord with a library problem he is having in the city of Uhlenhorst (ya I know, we are super unlucky with all things tower and library related, but don’t worry it gets worse). The Library is once more related to this whole thing, the Wizard had a Jani apprentice whom was trying to resolve magical issue after his masters death. The matter appears to be in hand now, but the apprentice worries of Elemental Lords and their movements. He claims that they have been more active of late and this could cause great issues for the world at large. He also is having troubles with a blue dragon but that seems unrelated to the larger issues… I know it seems hard looking at it in ink that a Blue Dragon is indeed a minor issue, let that be a measure of how totally messed up everything has gone. From here I am not sure how we will proceed, I would surly ask your counsel as I do not know how to progress, or even if we should. I am not a man of great faith, nor am I inclined towards Rune Magic or any such thing, and yet, whenever gods begin to take interest there is a part of me that feels that personal issues should be set aside, what is right? Where do the Greymen stand? How if at all should we continue? Is Malcav one to be trusted? To be worked for? My loyalty as always stands with the Greymen sir, where I am needed and what needs to be done you can count on me to do it.

ummmm…. I have a little paper left so…. How are things with you? I heard you were in the south last year… that must have been nice, was the weather good? Anyway I should wrap this up, ummmm I will send a copy of this to several cities in the Osweldt hoping that it finds a Captain or someone who can put it in your hands, I suspect we will stay put or at least won’t move farther then Nietz within the month, but again, things just seem to keep happening so…. ya.
In my own hand,

Greymen Zachary Colemen

Zack nodded, it got a little rambly there but he felt most of the points got across, he would have to make at least two more copies, if he sent one to each Greymen house in Osweldt he was sure Master Volstag would eventually get it… he just hopped it was soon enough.

Grumble, grumble

As the party headed to the library, Kethriel ranted to herself. Why’d I have to take up with Greymen? Things were so much simpler when I worked alone… Need supplies? Don’t have money? Great. Find the supplies, liberate the supplies. None of this ‘earning money’ nonsense. She had thought about going her usual route, but decided it probably wouldn’t go over well with Siegfried and Zack (although… Zack did seem to be seriously considering forgery).

Then Kethriel glanced down at her crossbow and smiled. At least she’d finally have a chance to do some real damage. Gremlins must have vital organs, right?

Reflecting

Zack sat in the room as he finished healing his companions; the others were resting or questing for potions as they waited for their next great adventure. Zack ran his hands through his hair as he finished explaining what had happened to Hoggle.

The older goblin looked to the corpse in the corner and back to the young caster, this was quickly getting out of his depth

“I, er, I don’t know kid… this sounds like some heavy shit. If you’re so unhappy why’d you sign the paper?”

“I don’t know…” Zack exhaled exasperated “it’s just… well, I didn’t want the others to go and get hurt, but… what is being asked sounds impossible, and this ‘god’ doesn’t really seem to be able to do anything, he certainly doesn’t seem like he is a nice god… I couldn’t just let them go off alone to be killed could I? I don’t know… what about the Greymen? Or the War? No one seemed to think of any of that when they just signed the papers… I’m so confused… what should I do Hoggle?”

“Look kid, you want to know the best way to break a line, or drop an Oger, I’m your man, but when we get to talking about this right or wrong kinda stuff… yer getting a bit beyond my prowess… have you thought about… you know… asking HER for some advice?”

Zack gave the goblin a chilling stare before responding “She doesn’t want to see me again… ever… I burnt that bridge when Gunthrie died” the goblin played with his chipped short sword and avoided eye contact for a long time before responding

“I know she said that kid, and Jovi knows I thinks she’s got more than a long sword stuffed up her arse, but she was right more often than not and she was preaching forgiveness when she left; you don’t think she might have some room in her heart for you?” Zack sighed at this and looked about the room for a place to avoid the conversation, finding none he continued

“I wouldn’t know how to contact her if I wanted to… This guy…” he pointed to the floating M “… seems pretty stingy with his magic for a direct representative of the god of magic, I asked about getting a message sent, he said upon completion…”
“wow… got yerself a pretty fine excuse not to try there then, might as well just throw in the towel now… nothing at all to be done here” the sarcasm seemed worse coming from a Goblin, Zack furrowed his brow

“well… besides Morelle was a worshiper of Ironus… she’s not allowed to work or know about this anyway”

“Umm… Boss… actually…. That’s not really true…” both Hoggle and Zack turned to look at Rickroll as he flipped through his notes, the smaller goblin seemed a little more nervous under their stares but continued “Umm… well Boss… you see that section 5 says we are not allowed to worship any other gods because Malkav doesn’t want them to know about the Runeforge or any of this business… but nowhere does it say you can’t tell other clerics about the forge, or anyone for that matter… you are just not allowed to worship any other gods… heck you could inform every cleric you meet about the full details of this quest and it wouldn’t technically break the contract… ummm it would however have a high likelihood of pissing off Malvak and ASIS there… but ya… you could still talk and work with her if you know… you wanted to”

Hoggle smiled and nodded at Rickroll then turned back to Zack patting him on the back “Ya see kid, you could talk to her if you wanted, and it sounds like it would ruffle the feathers of this ASIS fellow… if he’s anything like you describe him that sounds like a win/win in my books” Zack smiled a bit looking to each of his three companions he felt a little bit better, Hoggle spoke up again “and besides, you’ve already told us, and we aren’t bound by any of this stuff either… no one has smited you or us yet… this Malkav guy sounds pretty Bowie to me… a hands off type always letting someone else do his dirty work”

“Hoggle, Snot, Rickroll…” Zack looked to each of them in turn “should I have spared the wizard? I heard him say yield… maybe I should have…”

“pffff….” Snot interrupted “… who says ‘YEILD’ anyway… if you really want someone to stop everyone knows you say UNCLE or MERCY or I GIVE UP… yield… what a douche” Hoggle and Zack glared at the Goblin for a moment “What?… WHAT?” Zack turned his attention to the other two goblins

“Look kid, captain insensitive here aside, it sounds like ya made a good call… He was a shape shifter, he was turning ya into a bird and trapping yer companions… yer allies were seconds from disappearing… to be honest kid… if I were there, even if you’d called me off I can’t promise I wouldn’t have done the deed meself… it’s great that yer friends can stand their all morel now, ya done them a great service in letting them sleep well at night feeling self-righteous and all, but ya didn’t know how things were gonna go, and they could just as easily been killed seconds later. They oughta be thanking ya for their lives, that’s just my two cents though” Zack looked to Rickroll

“Umm… er… ah… well, I don’t know sir… I didn’t notice during the battle, but Ms Kethriel is right… he was using not so killing type magic…. But he also looked like a scary bonfire… I don’t know boss… I’m just a scribe here, it’s not really my place to say right or wrong… sorry” Zack looked over to Snot and quickly shook his head… Snot’s opinions on the matter were clear from his earlier comments

“You know how many people I’ve killed Hoggle….”

“Don’t go down that road kid… trust an old soldier it ain’t a pretty one” Zack ignored Hoggles wisdom

“Two… Gunthri and this Oberson wizard… When I did it each time I was so sure that I was right, that I was righteous like… like Morrelle used to… now both times they… they kinda… well everything just turned out wrong”

“Killings never easy kid, it’s a hard….”

“Wait a minute…” Snot interrupted Hoggle “You never killed either of those guys! Hoggle here was the one who offed that bastard Gunthrie, not that there was much of the sick twisted ass left, but it was Hoggles blade not yours… and Dester was the one who slit the wizards throat… he is already calling himself Obersonslayer, seriously, he is talking about having a t-shirt made… Why are you getting all emo about this, it’s on them boss not you”

Hoggle punched Snot hard giving him a fierce ‘shut the hell up’ look. Snot ignored it and punched Hoggle back. Hoggle grabbed Snot’s arm and kicked him in the head… a quick brawl broke out which took several minutes to break up. Finally, Snot deciding he knew when he wasn’t wanted went home leaving Hoggle to finish his conversation

“As I was saying before that daft prick interrupted…. Look kid, he don’t understand the burden of command, you gave the order, it’s as bad or worse than swinging the sword yerself… cause you are exactly where the buck stops… that said… I for one am glad it ain’t coming easy for ya, as soon as it’s easy for ya to kill and order death’s… well that’s when it sounds like yer more to thinking like Redcap and less like a proper goblin… Hang in there kid, things are gonna get hard, and things are gonna get tight, and if the past is at all like the future, shit is gonna get a lot worse. But me and my boys… we got yer back, just like I know you’ve got ours” Zack smiled, and hugged his companion

“Thanks Hoggle… I’ll think on it, I promise”

“Good, get some rest kid… we’ve gotta find a forge for some bullshit god in the morning, that sounds like it’ll probably be a full days work” with that Hoggle stood up and kicked Rickroll lightly ushering him to follow as the two opened a portal and returned to their homeland to prepare for the coming adventures.

Maybe... to many...

Siegfried looked at the information that the Lord had provided them. He listened to Edmund’s and Zack’s arguments. He had even managed to take a look from a distance at the tower in question.

Maybe…if they had a full Greyman squad

Maybe…if they were more powerful

Maybe… if there was more information on the tower.

The contract was also too strict…. and realistically he didn’t have the authority to make such a contract….especially when the fate of the entire brotherhood could be on the line.

He would have to refuse the contract,

Maybe the Lord would understand….

Maybe…

I’m afraid I agree for the most part… Now, this IS a contract, the point of those is that you go back and forth until both parties can agree. That being said, I do feel like this is going to end in blood and tears, I worry the Lord will either renege on the contract, or as you said, come up with some trumped up charges to dispose of us. Then again, the potential for reward is quite tempting.

Contract Conditions
- Complete neutralization of the Tower (WE CANT PROMISE THIS)
- Removal of all traps (both exterior and interior) (WE CANT PROMISE THIS)
- Unlocked and safe access to all rooms within the Tower (Reduction of compensation for every room left inaccessible) (REDUCTION SOUNDS TO ME LIKE WE WONT GET PAID AT ALL)
- Removal of any current denizens (THIS IS WERE i AM A VIKING… WELL HOGGLE MORE THEN ME, BUT WE CAN PROMISE THIS)

Suggestions: If the Lord wishes us to do this mission, he will have to accept that we lack the particular tool and skillset to guarantee the first three items in entirety. The first two ought to be removed, and the third ought to specify a definite value or percentage. The fourth is fine as is.

- Gifting of one magical item retrieved to each member of the contracted party(Lord’s choice) (WHY LORDS CHOICE… THAT SEEMS LIKE A LOAD OF CRAP, WE SHOULD PICK OUR OWN ITEM, OR HAVE 1 CHOICE AS OURS OR TWO ITEMS THAT HE CHOOSES… JUST SAYING WE ARE ALL GONNE END UP WITH CONTINUAL LIGHT ROCKS HERE)

I do believe it is standard that those risking their necks get first choice, or, if the employer is choosing, some sort of rule to guide a fair pick, along the lines of ‘Employers choice from collection of X items wanted by Employee.’

- Two objectives complete: The above reward and a personal thanks from the Lord, including the title of Defender of Lichtenrade, to be heralded and officially recorded in Geftlubaddian law (I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS, BUT SINCE A GREYMEN GIVES UP ALL CLAIM TO TITLE, I AM PRETTY SURE IT MEANS NOTHING)
- Three objectives complete: The above rewards and a Knighthood recognized by the court of Kaiser Adalwulf Benedictus for each member of the party. (SEE ABOVE)

I’m actually ok with these, though some checks need to be made: for the title, I would like to check just how many people get titled as ‘Defender of Lichtenrade’, if its a title the lord tosses out to anyone who asks, its worse then useless, and more likely to induce ridicule then anything else.
For the Knighthood… That seems alright, but then, I understand you guys aren’t eligible for it. Also may be impossible, since salvaging the defenses alone could be a massive de-construction project taking more time then the 3 days we are willing to spend. retrieving the layout or design plans, well they may very much be non-existent. If anyone of us is alright at mapmaking, we could try changing this to accept a hand drawn map of the tower.
I would suggest a contract change here the while these rewards are fine for myself, the greyman get a monetary or some other such bonus instead.

It may very well be the Lord Tythe will not wish our employment with the necessary contract changes.

I agree that normally this is something a squad of greyman would handle, usually my own job is merely to find locations like this and sell the information to said squad of greyman, with perhaps some light scouting of the immediate entrance. I would be quite willing to undertake this mission however, but A: Would have to be completable within the given time frame we were willing to spend on it (I believe we said we could take 3 days), and B: a lot of those contract loopholes and impossibilities would need to be closed.

Any thoughts Siegfried?

Zacks Read

Ok two things I get after reading this over; ed and sig feel free to weigh in on this

Right off the bat, we are well out of our league here, lacking a full blooded wizard and a thief or someone in the disarming traps business I don’t think we can do this

how are we going to know there are traps? wander around setting them off until we get Barbequed into nothingness? I can’t unlock magic doors, i can’t dispel fireball blasting magic, and i can’t pick locks, so I gots me a bad feeling… no scratch that I gots me a good feeling that we are gonna end up quite dead if we do this

or worse if we pull it off somehow we are gonna get swindled or jailed cause we missed a trap or a magic effect recharges a month later or some such bull. I don’t like it, I and I think i’ll have a rough go convincing Hoggle and Snot to weigh into this as well

now that being said, cause who knows, maybe you guys have a magic removing rod and a wand of lock opening these terms seem a little on the BS side of things

(SEE ABOVE)

Siggy, you and Ed here got yerselfs all cursed up, we are already talking about taking a time out from something that puts the entire Brotherhood at risk, and that I am sure the Cap wouldn’t be smilin about, to do this. At a glance it says to me out classed, out gunned, out manned and out lawyered. This was a royal wizard, with his own tower, normally their would be squads of Greymen with specialty casters for this… Unless you gents are seeing something that I aint… I’m for thinking we take another bath, grab some more of them blue tart things, stock up on rations and ride hard on the quest the Cap gave.

I am open to hearing ya out though… whadda ya say?

An Offer of Mutual Benefit
A tightly bound scroll arrives with all the details of the proposed deal.

Gentlemen,

I have had my personal scribe pull up the information on the wizard’s tower and scribe everything of pertinence within the following scrolls. The tower has not been inhabited since the War of Skulls and we have given up hope that the previous owner’s spells will give out with time. Please look over these plans at your leisure, but do not tarry too long. Who knows what foul magics will pour from the structure.

The rest of the information is written in a hand that is clearly practiced and exact.

Within this scroll you will find the following:
- A short history of the Tower and it’s previous owner.
- A list of the recent events concerning the Tower.

The Red Tower of Obrasyn

Obrasyn was a wizard loyal to King Gorig Gregoren who fought in the War of Skulls against Zenoi. During a pivotal battle, he was struck out of the sky by a lightning bolt cast by an opposing wizard. His brutal death caused a break in morale for Geftlubadd’s nearby troops, who fled the scene, thus surrendering Lichtenrade to the Zenoish troops.

After Obrasyn’s death he was posthumously demoted for his failure to protect the troops he was supporting and his allies in the court were forced to disavow their allegiance to the man.

The wizard is known for having been a Transmutation specialist and a botanist in his spare time. Before the war Obrasyn was known to be a harsh man. Although he was a recluse, he never failed to appear in court if summoned, albeit with a poor attitude bordering on traitorous. He currently has no living relatives or family friends. At least none that will admit to the relation.

Recent Activity

Approximately a month ago the Tower came alive for the first time. Lord Tythe ordered an incursion into the tower to gather items that might be useful to the defense of the town.

Previous attempts to enter the tower had been met with either extreme danger or with spells baring the way. Magical locks on the door make it impossible to enter the Tower from the ground level.

The attempt one month ago was engineered by Ser Taro Nalen who commissioned scaffolding to be built that would be stable enough to read the same height of the Tower’s glass windows and then travel over top of the wall and rose garden. During this attempt a great blast of fire sprang forth from one of the Tower’s 4 small spires and destroyed the scaffolding. Three men died in the attempt, two were maimed and have since been retired from service, while a half dozen more were injured.

Since then, any attempt to get too close to the tower has resulting in similar Evocation spells springing forth from the Tower. Miraculously, no one has since been seriously hurt by the barrages. The area around the Tower is now officially off limits and has been evacuated. Additionally, the roses in the garden below have grown to an enormous size. We have been unable to determine the cause of any of the magical effects.

A list of spells that have been recorded over the past month:
- Fireball x 3
- Lightning Bolt x 4
- Acid Arrow x 3
- Sleet Storm x 2
- Solid Fog x 1
- Ice Storm x 1

Other issues:
1. The door has been locked using a spell that the Lord’s adviser’s limited access to magic has not being able to overcome.
2. The rose bushes come alive when anyone enters the court yard, sending vines to creep across the ground and entangle anyone within. Since the growth of the roses, we have not attempted to enter the area for fear of what they might be able to do.
3. As long as no one is near the Tower, it has not released any effects. However, the danger of the Tower’s proximity and the fact that it holds items key to Lichtenrade’s defense dictate that it must be neutralized.
